The new ATEM Constellation 8K is an Ultra HD live production switcher with so many features that you can combine them to make it a super-powerful 8K switcher. This 4 M/Es switcher has 40 12G-SDI inputs, 24 auxiliary 12G-SDI outputs, 4 DVEs, 16 switchers, 4 media players, 4 multiviewers, 2 SuperSource engines and standards conversion on all SDI inputs. When operating in 8K mode, all these features combine to make it a powerful 8K switcher. You also get integrated intercom and a professional 156-channel Fairlight audio mixer with equalization and dynamics. The mixer is so large that you can connect and use a complete Fairlight audio console. The ATEM Constellation 8K has also been developed as the ideal upgrade for the ATEM Television Studio!

As the ATEM Constellation is a huge switcher, it can be used as a large HD and Ultra HD switcher, and then combine all these features instantly to work in native 8K. You have 40 independent 12G-SDI inputs when working in HD or Ultra HD. In 8K, these 40 inputs become 10 quad-link 12G-SDI 8K inputs. And all the inputs are up-converted and cross-converted! This means you can instantly switch between 720p, 1080p, 1080i, Ultra HD and 8K video standards. What’s more, you get 4 independent Ultra HD multi-viewers, which also turn into a maximum resolution 8K multi-viewer. Even the switchers, DVE, SuperSource and downstream switchers switch to native 8K.
The ATEM Constellation 8K has an integrated control panel and occupies two rack units. This simplifies switcher operation, which is crucial during installation or for emergency use. It also includes a large LCD, so you can view program output and change switcher settings via the on-screen menus. Despite its size of just 2U, the back of the switcher has an incredible 40 12G-SDI inputs, 24 auxiliary 12G-SDI outputs, plus balanced audio, ethernet, RS-422 control and additional MADI digital audio inputs for the internal Fairlight audio mixer. Even with all this power, the ATEM Constellation is extremely quiet, as it has an innovative, super-efficient thermal system, as well as three low-speed fans.
With an integrated control panel, you can simply take command of the ATEM Constellation at any time. As its operation is similar to the ATEM Television Studio, it’s a fantastic upgrade when you need a larger switcher. Whether it’s PGM/PVW or bus-cut style operation, you get enormous control. The buttons, with the same superior quality found on complete cutting desks, provide control of transitions, upstream/downstream switchers, media players and fade to black. You also get professional intercom with feedback for technicians and producers, as well as an XLR headset connection. But you’re never restricted, as the LCD menus give you access to all the switcher’s operational features.
You get 40 independent 12G-SDI inputs, all with their own up-converter and cross-converter. This means you can convert 1080p and Ultra HD sources to 8K and use them in your 8K programming. When working in HD and Ultra HD, you can connect up to 40 different sources in all formats up to 2160p60. When working in 8K, you can connect 10 quad-link 12G-SDI 8K sources in all formats up to 4320p60. You can even loop audio channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 from SDI inputs 1 to 30 to the two MADI digital audio outputs, so you can route the audio from all the switcher’s sources to an external sound engineer for mixing.
The ATEM Constellation 8K has 24 individually routable and fully customizable 12G-SDI outputs. All of these outputs are similar to auxiliary outputs, however, they are more powerful because you can route any external SDI input and all internal sources to any of these 12G-SDI outputs. This versatility is enough to run program feeds, clean feeds and outputs to stage projectors and videowalls. It’s like working with multiple switchers at the same time, with each team member receiving the customized feed they need. On all 12G-SDI outputs, you get built-in program audio, support for mix minus, built-in RP-188 time code, SDI camera control, signaling and intercom.
All ATEM switchers have various control options via hardware or software. In addition, you can share control panels between all ATEM models for different live events. The ATEM Constellation also includes complete control software for Mac and Windows. The software connects to the switcher via ethernet, providing switcher control, media loading, audio mixing and camera control. You can even run multiple copies of the switcher software at the same time! So, on larger productions, you can add an ATEM Advanced Panel for cuts or even an ATEM Camera Control Panel for dedicated camera control. There’s even an SDK for developers to create their own control solutions!
The integrated multi-viewers allow you to monitor multiple sources on a single monitor. There are 4 independent multi-view outputs, which can be customized or individually transformed into a single 8K multi-view of maximum resolution when you switch to 8K mode. You get the stunning quality that only 8K multi-view can offer. What’s more, all external inputs and all internal sources can be routed to any view. Each multi-view can be configured independently for 4, 7, 10, 13 or 16 simultaneous views. Each view has an on-screen status, including custom label, VU meters and signaling. The four 12G-SDI multi-view outputs are compatible with HD and Ultra HD up to 2160p60 and up to 4320p60 via quad-link 12G-SDI in 8K mode.
ATEM Constellation 8K includes a wide range of broadcast-quality 8K transitions, such as merge, dip, wipe and more. All transitions can be customized by adjusting parameters such as duration, border color, border width, position and direction. Even the transitions are entirely in native 8K! You also get amazing DVE transitions, perfect for graphic wipes and even vignettes when used with the built-in media players. To avoid mistakes, ATEM Constellation also has a transition preview feature, allowing you to check your transitions before going live.
ATEM Constellation has four independent Ultra HD DVEs, which act together as a single full-resolution 8K DVE when you’re working with 8K formats. You can use this incredible high-quality DVE to position, resize, rotate and scale live video in real time. You can also create professional PiP effects with 3D borders, shadows and customized lighting. DVEs can also be used to create amazing transitions with shrinking, pushing and flying effects, making your programming more interesting. You can even combine DVE transitions with custom graphics to create your own graphic wipes.
To keep creative teams working in sync, ATEM Constellation has integrated intercom, which features a 5-pin XLR headset connector, as well as an RJ45 expansion on the back for use with industry-standard systems such as ClearCom or RTS. You have full control of the intercom, including loop channels for program and technicians, sidetone control to hear your own voice and the programming mix in the headset. ATEM Constellation also supports SDI intercom via SDI channels 15 and 16 for two-way communication with Blackmagic Design cameras. You can even use channels 13 and 14 for intercom with technicians. You can also mix the intercom microphone into the program audio for voiceovers.
The internal media pool stores RGBA graphics and broadcast-quality animations that can be played back instantly via the two media players. The media players appear as additional input sources on the ATEM Constellation 8K, so you don’t need to use extra SDI inputs to use graphics. For maximum quality, the media pool is capable of storing up to 24 full-resolution 8K still frames or 64 Ultra HD or HD still frames. Motion graphics clips for use in animations and vignettes can have up to 100 8K RGBA frames, 400 frames in Ultra HD or an incredible 1600 frames in 1080HD. You can manage all your media using the included ATEM Software Control or download graphic elements directly from Photoshop using the included ATEM Photoshop plug-in.
The ATEM Constellation is the perfect choice for newsreels and virtual sets, as it includes 16 advanced ATEM chroma keyers for high-quality chrominance or luminance keying. The chroma keyer is incredibly powerful and includes a color picker, with which you can sample colors from the background for automatic generation of key parameters. In addition to precise controls for edges and reflections, you get a foreground color corrector to match the look of the foreground layer to the background layer for perfect compositions. The switcher can also be used for DVE and pattern switching, offering incredible versatility. So when you switch to 8K, you still have four independent ATEM Advanced 8K Chroma Switchers at full resolution.
With 40 multi-rate 12G-SDI inputs, the ATEM Constellation 8K is compatible with HD, Ultra HD and 8K SDI sources. When working in HD, it’s easy to operate at high frame rates and formats up to 720p60, 1080p60 and 1080i59.94. In Ultra HD, you can work with 2160p formats of up to 60 frames per second using a single 12G-SDI connection. In 8K mode, it is now possible to operate in 4320p formats up to 60p using quad-link 12G-SDI, compatible with 8K in real time via four BNC cables. Thanks to the multi-rate 12G-SDI connections, you can switch between HD, Ultra HD and 8K formats and adapt to the needs of your work anywhere in the world.
The ATEM Constellation 8K is the world’s first live production switcher to fully embrace professional live audio production. All SDI inputs are connected to an integrated Fairlight audio mixer, which includes a six-band parametric equalizer, compressor, limiter, gate and expander on all inputs. There is even a MADI connection for 32 additional input channels on the internal audio mixer. The ATEM Constellation 8K can even be connected to a Fairlight professional mixing console. In addition, there are two MADI outputs for expanding channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the first 30 SDI inputs for an external audio engineer. You can even mix audio from analog inputs, intercom microphones for voiceovers and much more.
With an integrated Fairlight audio mixer, the ATEM Constellation enables extremely complex live sound mixes. With an impressive 156 channels, this is the largest audio mixer included in a live production switcher! 80 channels of the mixer are de-embedded from the SDI inputs, while another 64 audio channels come in via the MADI connection. Each input channel has a compressor and six-band parametric equalizer, limiter, expander and gate of the highest quality, as well as full panning. You also get additional channels for analog input, intercom microphone and media players. All this audio capacity can be controlled via ATEM Software Control, a Mackie panel or a compatible Fairlight Audio console.
The ATEM Software Control Panel, included free of charge, gives you complete control over your switcher. The ATEM Software Control Panel offers a beautiful interface consisting of a switcher and visible parameter palettes for making quick adjustments. Several users can connect to the switcher via ethernet and work on different parts of the event simultaneously. ATEM Software Control also lets you access camera control, audio mixer, media, macro programming and even control HyperDeck disk recorders. You can also save the switcher’s complete configuration as XML files, and backup copies of all media are made in the media pool. What’s more, the software is compatible with both Mac and Windows!
All ATEM switchers come with a wide range of control panels that can be customized according to the type of work you are doing. The physical ATEM control panels have a program/quick preview mode, which is the industry standard for switcher control. All transitions have direct access buttons, and you even have a lever to merge transitions manually. For precise control of the DVE, the joystick includes X, Y and rotation positions for zooming. You can use the LCD menus to control features that don’t have dedicated rotary controls and buttons. You can even configure and trigger macros directly from the panel! ATEM panels have internal power supplies, as well as a standard IEC AC connector.
The new ATEM Camera Control Panel provides four industry-standard camera controllers for the same workflow as camera chains that cost thousands of dollars more. Designed to be portable, the ATEM Camera Control Panel can be installed on a desk or in a sliding rack shelf. All commands are sent to the cameras via the SDI camera control protocol, compatible with cameras such as the Blackmagic URSA Broadcast and Blackmagic Studio Camera. You get dedicated controls, including joystick and CCU-style controls for RGB camera color, master gain, black, iris and more. What’s more, all the controls are arranged in a logical and familiar broadcast-style layout, making it ideal for both beginners and more experienced operators.
