Now you can position your cameras at long distances from your switcher and get closer to the action with the ATEM Camera and Studio converters. The ATEM Camera Converter is a super-rugged fiber optic converter with intercom, signaling, microphone inputs and a built-in long-life battery. Using low-cost fiber optics, you can connect your cameras up to 45 km away and, even over these long distances, get fully bi-directional video, audio, intercom and signaling signals!

The perfect solution for live events!

ATEM converters are the perfect solution for live music concerts and sporting events, when you need to position cameras in remote locations such as race tracks or near a stage, but there’s a long distance between the live action and your switcher! You can connect up to 4 ATEM Camera Converter models to each ATEM Studio Converter and get multiple intercoms. This way, all camera operators can communicate with the switcher operator using the built-in intercom on channels 15 and 16 of the fiber-optic SDI connection.

There are two ATEM converters to use at the opposite ends of a live camera connection! The ATEM Camera Converter converts your camera’s SDI or HDMI output to fiber optics, with built-in external audio and intercommunication from the camera position. Its machined aluminum design is lightweight, sturdy and includes a long-lasting internal battery for greater portability. The ATEM Studio Converter’s rack-mountable design has 4 bi-directional fiber optic connections so you can connect multiple camera converters and convert the fiber optic input to SDI and output the audio using XLR connections.

Fiber Optic Connection

Work over distances of up to 45 kilometers!

ATEM converters connect using standard single-mode fiber optic cables with standard LC connectors. Optical fiber allows connection over much longer distances than traditional copper cables. It is widely available, affordable and easy to use, as the same fiber optic cable is used in computer networks. The ATEM Camera Converter and ATEM Studio Converter employ the standard SMPTE specification for fiber optic connections using standard single-mode optical fiber operating at 1310 nm, allowing connection over distances of up to 45 kilometers!

Integrate intercommunication on unused SDI channels.

Intercommunication

Communication with your camera operators is essential during the most intense live productions. The ATEM Camera Converter and ATEM Studio Converter take advantage of the 16-channel SDI audio standard and integrate intercom on the rarely used channels 15 and 16. The ATEM Camera Converter works with standard headsets for PCs and iPhones, while the ATEM Studio Converter works with more robust, aircraft-grade headsets, available in hundreds of different styles! The ATEM Studio Converter also includes an integrated microphone input and a speaker so you don’t have to use a headset.

The signage is simple to use and makes it easy to see when you’re on air!

It’s important for camera operators to know when their cameras are on air, so they don’t accidentally change their shooting plans while millions of people could be watching! The ATEM Camera Converter and ATEM Studio Converter support signaling SDI output from the program feed of switchers, such as those in Blackmagic Design’s ATEM range of live production switchers. When a camera is on air, a red LED lights up on the ATEM Camera Converter and a red signaling border is visible on the converter’s SDI and HDMI monitoring outputs!

The ATEM Camera Converter is made from a solid block of aluminum to withstand daily use in live production environments. An integrated belt clip allows you to operate cameras with ease while keeping your headphones connected. The ATEM Studio Converter includes a sophisticated front panel made of aluminum for a super-strong design that also includes microphone and headphone connections, backlit push-to-talk (PTT) buttons, as well as an integrated speaker and volume control for intercommunication. All video and audio connections are located on the rear panel and the integrated power supply supports 110 V to 240 V.

The ATEM Camera Converter features high-quality SDI and HDMI inputs for connecting professional SDI equipment and home HDMI cameras. It includes 1/4″ stereo connectors with mic/line inputs so that external commentary and audio effects can also be sent from the camera position. The ATEM Studio Converter has 4 bi-directional fiber converters that convert each camera feed from fiber optic to SDI and transmit balanced analog audio on XLR connectors. A program SDI loop input is also included, as well as AES/EBU with microphone and headphone loops that allow connection to multiple ATEM Studio Converters.

Intelligent Software

Keep up to date!

Blackmagic Design’s Converter Utility software allows you to quickly configure converter functions, including camera numbers and audio levels. The software also allows you to update your ATEM converters with the latest firmware via a USB connection on each converter. This way, you can download firmware updates to add new features or support for new video formats. The Converter Utility software is available for both Mac OS X and Windows.
