The ATEM Mini Pro model has a built-in hardware streaming engine for live streaming via its integrated Ethernet connection. This means you can stream live to YouTube, Facebook and Twitch in superior quality, without dropped frames and with much simpler settings. Simply select the streaming service and enter the streaming key. There are palettes in ATEM Software Control for configuration and streaming status. The streaming status is also displayed in the multi-view. It’s easy to understand the streaming status, as the data rate indicator displays the internet speed required for the video format being used. If you’re technically savvy, you can even hack the streaming profiles detailed in the XML preferences file and load new services.
The ATEM Mini Pro model also supports direct recording of your streaming data onto USB flash drives. This means that you can make very long recordings of the same H.264 files with AAC audio as you streamed so that you can upload them directly to any website on the internet, such as YouTube and Vimeo. The ATEM Mini Pro supports multiple drives when used with a USB hub or Blackmagic MultiDock, so when a first drive is filled, recording can continue on a second one uninterrupted. Recording settings and drive selection are made in ATEM Software Control. And you can also follow the recording status in the integrated multi viewer. You can even trigger recordings on external Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras.
The biggest advantages of the ATEM Mini are the professional production values, which are made possible by a series of integrated video effects. The “Cut” button ensures a dry cut when switching between sources. The “Auto” button, found on larger broadcast switchers, provides video transitions with effects. There are video effect duration buttons, offering settings of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 seconds. You can also select the type of effect you want, including blending, which makes a smooth transition between sources, and immersion, which fades in via a color during the transition. Or use fun DVE effects that move the image off-screen during the transition between sources.

You can even connect a music player to play intro music before the start of your program after streaming has begun. Each of the four HDMI inputs has its own dedicated standards converter. This means that the ATEM Mini will convert 1080p, 1080i and 720p sources to the switcher’s video standard automatically. By default, the switcher will set its video format automatically. However, it is also possible to configure the switcher to the video format you need. The HDMI output is a true auxiliary output, to which you can transmit the HDMI inputs or the program feed. You can even switch input 1 directly to the HDMI output and get low latency for eSports productions. If you are using the switcher in program/preview mode, the HDMI output can be selected for preview. On the ATEM Mini Pro model, it can be used to display a full multiviewer.

The ATEM Software Control application unlocks the full potential of the ATEM Mini, giving you control over all the switcher’s features. The ATEM Software Control Panel has an interface consisting of a visual switcher, with parameter palettes for making quick adjustments. While it is usually possible to connect via USB, connecting via Ethernet allows multiple users to connect to the ATEM Mini using separate copies of ATEM Software Control on different computers. Through the software, you can access all the features of the audio mixer, including effects, loading static frames and even advanced macro programming. You can even save the status of the switcher with an XML file! If you need to play back clips, you can even control HyperDeck disk recorders via Ethernet.
One of the coolest features of the ATEM Mini is the digital video effects processor, commonly known as “DVE”, which allows you to create picture-in-picture effects and DVE transitions. With DVE, you can create professional PiP effects with 3D edges, shadows and customized lighting. The image quality is the same as that of high-end ATEM switcher models, and DVE allows you to position, resize, rotate and scale live video in real time. DVE can also be used to create incredible transitions with 16 different effects to shrink and push the image, making your programming more interesting. DVE includes a “flying key” that can be used with custom graphics to create transitions with graphic wipes.
ATEM Mini includes a wide range of native HD broadcast-quality transitions, such as merge, dip, wipe and more. All transitions can be customized by adjusting parameters such as duration, border color, border width, position and direction. You can also use DVE in transitions, allowing a graphic to move over the edge of the wipe, which is called a graphic wipe, much used in sports programming. To avoid mistakes, ATEM Mini has a transitions preview feature, so you can check transitions before going live.
The integrated “media pool” allows up to 20 RGBA quality graphics files to be loaded for titling, opening backgrounds and logos. The media player is used to output the selected image so that it can be displayed as an additional internal video source for use in titling and graphics. You can even use still frames for complex effects such as graphic wipes. ATEM Mini is able to capture still frames from the video output and add them to the internal media pool. Graphics can be uploaded via ATEM Software Control or downloaded directly from Photoshop using the ATEM Photoshop plug-in. The Photoshop plug-in is perfect for graphics that change frequently, such as scoreboards, as you download them directly to the media player.
The ATEM Mini is perfect for news and virtual sets, as it includes an advanced ATEM upstream chroma keyer, as well as an additional linear downstream keyer. The chroma keyer is incredibly powerful and includes a color picker, with which users can sample colors from the background to automatically generate key parameters. In addition to precise controls for edges and reflections, you get a foreground color corrector to combine the foreground with the background layers for perfect compositions. The keyer can also be used for DVE and pattern keying. You can even use it for title overlays when creating graphics with a green or blue background and the keyer will eliminate the green and make the background transparent.
Although it comes factory-set in “cut bus” mode, the ATEM Mini can also be switched to the “program/preview” operating style, which is the operating mode of live production switchers used by major broadcasters. In cut bus mode, when you select an input, the switcher instantly switches to that source. However, if you prefer to operate the ATEM Mini like a true professional, you can configure the switcher to operate in program/preview mode using ATEM Software Control. In “M/E” style, the selected source will not be transmitted until you press the “Cut” or “Auto” button. This two-step program/preview process means fewer errors. The program/preview operation is ideal for preparing students for a career in the broadcast industry.
When doing larger live productions with multiple cameras, it’s very useful to view all your video sources at the same time on a single monitor. The ATEM Mini Pro model includes a professional multiviewer that lets you keep track of all four video inputs, plus preview and program, on a single TV or HDMI monitor. Simply select M/V on the front panel video output control buttons to enable the multiviewer. All camera views include signal indicators to let you know when each source is on air. Each view also has customized labels and audio meters. You can also view the media player so you know which graphic has been selected. In addition, the multiviewer even includes statuses for recording, streaming and the Fairlight audio mixer!
With the integrated Fairlight audio mixer, the ATEM Mini makes complex live sound mixes possible. The internal mixer has a total of 12 channels so you can mix audio from all sources! That is, audio from all HDMI sources and the two stereo microphone inputs. Each input channel has a compressor and six-band parametric equalizer, limiter, expander and noise reducer of the highest quality, as well as full panning. You can even configure the software to mix the inputs automatically by activating “AFV” or to mix several live sources at the same time. All this audio capacity can be controlled by ATEM Software Control. You can also add a compatible Mackie panel or even a huge Fairlight Audio console.
The ATEM Software Control connects to the ATEM Mini via USB or Ethernet, however, the advantage of Ethernet is that you can use it to share the internet connection of your computers to stream on the ATEM Mini Pro model! Simply connect the ATEM Mini Pro via Ethernet and configure your computer to share its internet connection. Using Ethernet is easy; when you run the software, you just need to select the ATEM Mini model. If you’re streaming on the ATEM Mini Pro, you’ll also need to configure your computer to share the internet. Now you get control and streaming via a single Ethernet cable. This offers incredible mobility, as you can connect your computer to the internet using wireless connections such as Wi-Fi or even sharing the 4G and 5G connection of cell phones.
For a broadcast-style workflow, you can control your cameras remotely from the ATEM Mini. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K models can be operated as studio cameras with control sent to the ATEM Mini via the HDMI connection. This means that you can control the camera settings, as well as the camera’s color corrector, via ATEM Software Control. Imagine changing ISO, tint, as well as iris, focus and lens zoom, so that camera operators can concentrate on the picture plane. There are two types of control interface, one with a camera control unit (CCU) style layout for traditional tone control and the other with a DaVinci Resolve color corrector interface, so you can use the camera’s built-in DaVinci color corrector to add digital film “looks” to your live production.

Imagine operating the switcher in a control room and setting up a professional studio where the control room is away from the performance and interview space! Ethernet allows you to add as many panels as you like, all at the same time, or you can create customized solutions using the SDK for developers.
The HDMI program output is perfect for connecting the ATEM Mini to an external recorder or monitor. The ATEM Mini is compatible with recorders such as Blackmagic Video Assist. You get a high-quality output that contains the program video from the switcher and the live audio from the internal mixer. The HDMI output can even be connected to video projectors in larger spaces. If you connect ATEM Software Control, you can even make ISO recordings from one of the inputs. What’s more, in the more advanced ATEM Mini Pro model, you can generate multiple formats by recording from the HDMI program output in ProRes while simultaneously recording the H.264 video stream from the stream onto a USB flash drive.
With integrated ethernet, the ATEM Mini can use physical control panels for high-level workflows that take advantage of the broadcast features included in the switcher. The ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel is operated program/preview style, with separate buttons for the program and preview rows. You get direct access to all transitions automatically or manually using the fader lever. For precise control of the DVE, the joystick includes X, Y positions, as well as rotation to adjust the size of the DVE. You also have LCD menus to control features that don’t have rotary controls and dedicated buttons. You can even program and trigger macros!
