Upgrade to Better Digital Camera Shooting
The Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR is the ideal upgrade for any camera, with a super-bright 2500 nits viewfinder that’s bigger than the small viewfinders found on domestic cameras. You’ll also get professional focus assist features and better quality file formats. Video Assist is also a great solution for professional cameras, because it can be used to upgrade older broadcast cameras to modern file formats used with the latest editing programs. Regardless of the editing software you use, Video Assist is compatible with all of them, and you can record in Apple ProRes, Avid DNx and Blackmagic RAW. With HDMI and 12G-SDI inputs, you can connect it to any home camera, professional camera and even DSLRs. On compatible cameras, you can even upgrade to RAW workflows with Blackmagic RAW.
Large HDR monitor with simple touch controls
The innovative LCD touchscreen user interface offers incredible control. On the screen, there are dedicated buttons for playback, stop and record, as well as a mini timer to navigate through your recordings. You can even drag images forward and backward at intervals! The LCD includes a heads-up display with time code display, video pattern, media status, as well as audio meters. Scopes can also be enabled via the touch screen, as well as focus and exposure assistance. There is also a wide range of settings, all controlled via the LCD screen. What’s more, you can load and save 3D LUTs!
Dual Media Recorders for Uninterrupted Recording
Video Assist uses commonly available SD card media, so you can record on easy-to-find flash memory cards. The files are small enough to enable long recordings on standard SD cards or faster UHS-II cards. In fact, the larger Video Assist 12G 7″ model includes two SD card slots so you can swap out a full card even during a recording, making infinite-length recordings possible. Standard SD cards or faster UHS-II cards are ideal for broadcasting because they are small, fast and affordable.
Record Directly to USB-C External Media Disks
If you need to record on other types of media, the USB-C expansion port allows you to connect an external flash drive for recording. USB-C flash drives have enormous capacity, as they are not restricted in size. What’s more, you can record to the same drive you’re using or editing on, so you don’t waste time copying files before starting post-production. Flash drives are so fast that they can record formats with high data rates that are too big for lower-cost media cards, such as high-frame-rate Ultra HD. Imagine adding a Blackmagic MultiDock 10G for easy compatibility of SSDs with other recorders, such as the Blackmagic HyperDeck models! You even get touch-screen menus to manage external drives with it!
Advanced 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs and outputs
Video Assist includes a wide range of video and audio connections, such as 12G-SDI multi-rate for SDI devices for SD, HD and Ultra HD. HDMI is included for HDMI cameras and monitoring on home televisions and video projectors. The 7-inch models include mini XLR inputs that are provided for audio input from microphones and external audio mixers. The USB-C connection allows you to plug in flash drives or disk arrays for recording, enabling extremely long-lasting recordings and, as you are recording onto a media disk, it is possible to edit from this disk itself after filming, eliminating additional work with copying the files. Video Assist even includes a 12 V DC power connection via a lockable connector.
HDR Support with Wide Range Bright LCD
You’ll be ready for the latest HDR workflows with support for the latest HDR standards and an extremely bright screen with a wide color gamut. The high-brightness screen even enables outdoor shooting in bright sunlight. The built-in scopes even change to HDR scopes when working in HDR formats. Files are tagged with the correct HDR information so that the SDI and HDMI inputs automatically detect HDR video standards. PQ and HLG static metadata formats are handled according to the ST 2084 standard. The bright LCD screen has a wider color gamut and can support Rec.2020 and Rec.709 color spaces. The HDR color gamut integrated into the Video Assist LCD is capable of handling up to 100% of the DCI-P3 format.
Integrated Scopes Ensure Standards Compliance
Video Assist includes full internal waveform monitoring to ensure compliance with broadcast standards and also works very well as a portable monitoring solution. The waveform display offers a traditional view of the luminance (brightness) levels of your input or playback signal. The vectorscope display allows you to see the color intensity at 100% of the SDI reference levels. There is also an RGB display, which is ideal for color correction and checking illegal levels. The histogram displays the distribution of black and white details in your images and the clipping of highlights or shadows. The integrated scopes can be overlaid on live video, or as a small picture-in-picture preview in the top right corner of the scope.
12G-SDI Multi rate for SD, HD and Ultra HD
You get full support for all the most popular video standards. The SDI and HDMI connections are multi-rate, so they operate SD, HD and Ultra HD. SD formats include NTSC and PAL. HD 720p standards include 720p50 and 59.94p. HD 1080i interlaced formats include 1080i50 and 59.94. HD 1080p formats include 1080p23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94 and 60p. It’s even possible to work with PsF 1080 formats. Ultra HD is compatible up to 2160p59.94. You can even record DCI 2K and 4K at rates of up to 25p for digital cinema work.
Upload Custom 3D LUTs to Recreate Movie Looks!
Some cameras can output a logarithmic color space to preserve dynamic range, which is excellent later in post-production. However, when these files are viewed on a monitor, they can look dull and faded. 3D LUTs correct this problem because they allow you to apply a “look” to the monitor so that you have a sense of what the finished images will look like when editing. LUTs can be applied temporarily just for monitoring, or they can be burned into the files for use in editing when shooting with Blackmagic RAW. Video Assist works with industry-standard 17- and 33-point 3D LUT files, or you can work with the built-in LUTs, such as Extended Video, Film to Video, Film to Rec. 2020, among others.
File formats suitable for post-production
Video Assist records using open file formats so you don’t waste time transcoding media. The files are compatible with all post-production applications so you can work with the software of your choice, including DaVinci Resolve Studio. Recording is performed in industry-standard 10-bit Apple ProRes files in all formats and from all HDMI or SDI cameras, or in 12-bit Blackmagic RAW when connected to compatible cameras. Blackmagic RAW is the fastest growing RAW format and developers can download and use the free Blackmagic RAW SDK to add support to their applications. Best of all, the media files work on all operating systems!
RAW quality and video speed!
Blackmagic RAW is a revolutionary new format designed to capture and preserve the quality of camera sensor data. Video Assist is compatible with Blackmagic RAW recordings from popular cameras such as the Panasonic EVA1 and Canon C300 MK II. This eliminates the problems with common camera formats such as H.264, which are highly compressed, resulting in noise and processing artifacts. Blackmagic RAW does away with this problem and delivers stunning images with incredible detail and color throughout all stages of production, from camera to editing, colorizing and mastering. It also saves camera settings as metadata so that customers can set ISO, white balance and exposure and replace them later in editing, without any loss of quality. Only Blackmagic RAW offers such small files with the highest quality and fastest performance.
Professional Multichannel SDI and Analog Audio
Blackmagic Video Assist 12G includes professional audio for current cameras or other external audio equipment. Working in SDI formats, you can record 2, 4, 8 or 16 audio channels in real time. For connecting microphones, the 7″ Video Assist model has two analog XLR audio inputs with phantom power that support high-definition sampling rates at 192 kHz with 16 and 24 bits per sample without compression. You can monitor using on-screen audio meters with user-selectable VU or PPM ballistics. Blackmagic Video Assist 12G includes the latest sound technology, with analog connections designed for the low-noise, low-distortion specifications of cinema and broadcasting.
Localized for 11 Popular Languages
Multiple languages are fully supported, so you don’t need to learn another language to use it! English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese and Turkish are supported. On first start-up, Video Assist will display the language selection menu, however, you can use the menus to change languages whenever necessary. When a language is selected, the text overlays on the screen change, as do all the menus and overlays that are enabled on the video outputs. All this means that Video Assist is perfect for working on international locations with different crews!
Works with the Most Popular Video Programs on the Market
Blackmagic Video Assist 12G files are common and compatible with all operating systems or most video programs. The media can be formatted using exFAT or HFS+ so that you can easily access them on computers as if they were ordinary disks. DaVinci Resolve is perfect for use with Video Assist because it includes editing, color correction, audio post-production and visual effects all in the same software application. What’s more, you can download DaVinci Resolve for free for Mac, Windows and Linux! You can also use files recorded in other popular programs, such as Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X. With Video Assist, your media is common, so the files will remain readable in the future.
